amd64 7.0 on HP systems? (dc7700 convertible minitower)

Trying to install the amd64 7.0-200708 snapshot on an HP Compaq dc7700
convertible minitower gives the "panic: No BIOS smap info from
loader" error described in PR 111952 and 111955. The amd64
6.2-RELEASE also gives this panic.
The i386 7.0-200708 snapshot installs ok. I haven't tested other
installs. Archive searches haven't turned up solutions other than
"upgrade the BIOS and see what happens" or "use i386 and see if that
works".
Is there hope that this panic will be fixed in the amd64 7.0-RELEASE?
Or should I just assume I will be using i386?
The dc7700 is Intel Core2 CPU 6700, 4 GB RAM, BIOS 786E1 version 1.10
(seems to be most recent available).
Thanks,
- Bob
