You did a make buildworld?
You just have to boot in single user mode and run mergemaster -p and
mergemaster.

Broken loader in STABLE ... I think something has changed with regards to loader in STABLE recently, ... Previously I have been able to boot fine and the system has been solid ... I did a make buildworld, buildkernel, installkernel, reboot, mergemaster... I can boot my system using a FreeBSD 6.1-BETA#1 Install... (freebsd-stable)
