I'm running an ircd (derived from unrealircd) on a FreeBSD 5.5-

At the risk of sounding rude, the 5.x series of FreeBSD is
deprecated.

FYI, 5.5 is officially supported until May 31, 2008.

See http://www.freebsd.org/security/#adv

Only security fixes would go into the 5.5 release branch, however. If
you have to run 5.x I'd recommend 5-STABLE as regular bug fixes can be
committed there.
