I agree that it's most likely a hardware failure. Make sure your fans are
turning freely and quickly. If your have semi-new hardware, you should be
able to check BIOS to find out your fan speed (I think there's software to
check temps and fans as well).
I'd like to add that I've seen reboots caused by kernel panics (or
something) related to the HDD. If the kernel can't write, then it won't be
in the log. In addition to logging *.* to /var/log/all, have it direct that
information to a remote syslog. You can also redirect console to a serial
port, and capture it there as well (check the handbook and/or google about
setting up a serial console).
If the box is rebooting frequently, there is definitely something wrong, but
it shouldn't be too difficult to find a pattern.
