    isn't it possible to boot from a livecd (second FreeBSD CD), mount the partitions, do a chroot to the mounted system and reset the password?

    But be careful: if you want to bring these cases to court you should document each step and should copy the original discs to other disks (make checksums before and after) and work with these other disks.
