Upgrading 5.4 to 6.x isn't an issue at all!
make buildworld
make kernel
reboot
... into single user mode (if you are following the official upgrade
procedure; if not then you are on your own if you break things)
make installworld
mergemaster
... correctly answering all the questions about which files to overwrite,
which to leave alone, or attempt to merge the diffs.
reboot
... remembering that from the start of the first reboot until the end of the
second one, your router will be off-line.
