I recommend Postfix as well. I have tried Exim, Sendmail, hMailServer (a
MS-Windows solution), but I have always come back to Postfix as a great
combination of easy-to-configure, use, and stable.
A friend told me that Courier Mail Server is attractive as a "do all"
solution, but I have no personal experience other than the Courier IMAP
solution, which worked very well.
Cheers,

I am trying to plan a ISP deployment using FreeBSD. I am more familiar

What is the best way to manage the addition of new users to the email
server? local users or is there a database solution. Also is there a
software package available to easily administer email accounts or does
it all have to be done with custom scripts.
I would welcome any suggestions of anecdotes of experience.
I highly recommend running Postfix.. It is a very easy to learn and
has lots of advanced features such as being able to authenticate/query
databases (mysql, postgres) or LDAP in addition to the normal stuff.
I also recommend this book (The Book of Postfix):
