I can't even get net-snmpd installed and configured correctly :)

Googling is not turning up any nice how to's and nice explanations of
the
myriad features of snmpd and snmpdtrap... so frustrating :/

Try and install a app called ntop (http://www.ntop.org/) very powerful
and complete bandwidth monitoring application.
