We've got maybe 20-25 of the Allied Telesyn 100baseFX->TX media
converters round the buildings. Never had any trouble in years of use.
It's a shame you've had issues. Would certainly simplify choosing a
suitable network card.
I'll give that card a shot, thanks for the suggestion! I agree that
using media converters would simplify the choice of NICs, but out past
experience with them (I don't know the manufacturer offhand) makes me
a little hesitant to go that route.
