I to am sorta having this problem too....
After setting up a fresh install of FreeBSD 5.2.1 and installing XFCE4,
XMMS et al. from ports I tried to test xmms and it says that it can not
find /dev/dsp or that it's busy or something of the sort. I've setup the
card (DEC Workstation with onboard ESS 1887) as a KO (pcm and sbc) in
/boot/loader.conf, checked dmesg to see that they were loaded, checked
that the devices nodes are in /dev, and also have confirmed that the
card is working by using cdcontrol to play CDs....I read briefly in the
    multimedia section of the handbook:
    http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/multimedia.html
about setting the card to use multiple sound sources but have not had
the time to try it, setting up sound isn't high on my todo list :-). So
my question is, if I follow the advice in the handbook about multiple
sound sources will this fix the problem I'm having with xmms?, if not do
    you have relevant links?
