    I wonder if his edition is rather old.

    I seem to remember him [grog] mentioning, once upon a time (&& YMMV)
    that he had his reasons for doing it, and that it was a rather long
    time ago (the book is in what, 4th edition now?); obviously if you
    go back enough years, 4 Gb was a pretty substantial chunk of the
    available storage for most HDDs at that time ....
