Does FreeBSD allow access to CPU-specific performance counters
for Intel and AMD CPUs? The ones which can be used to optimize
pipeline and branch prediction things, etc.

Analysis indicates the pipeline has to get much longer than P4's before pipeline length per se starts limiting performance. ... It may well be that the decision to make a speed demon rather than a brainiac came from marketing, but the engineers didn't say "oh well, guess we've just got to fool the punters with a crap CPU", they said "fair enough, we'll make a speed demon that'll have such a high clock speed that it really will outperform the brainiac competition". ... Re: GHZ vs Cores? ... it had a very long pipeline,... as I recall from my days of designing CPUs, branches occur every 4 or 5 ... The long pipeline and resulting high clock rate... worked for Intel for several years. ... (comp.sys.intel)

Similar dramas with my P90, which was my last Intel cpu (all AMD cpus still going strong, back to my K6 233 I think it was). ... People rushed out to buy the latest hardware for features like PS3.0 (when there wasn't even one game using it lol!), DX10, when you lose 20% by using Vista off the bat, for a total of 2 games that even use it right now rofl, etc, etc, without even *thinking* about the reality of the purchase & practical ...
