What do mean by "connected"?
If you wish check that your serial modem works, then check manual page
for "cu".
For example, you can talk to modem on COM1:
cu -l /dev/cuaa0 # (/dev/cuad0 on FreeBSD 6+)
at
OK
Press ~q to exit.
