totem crashes on launch - gnome 2.16

Hello Folks

Compiled gnome 2.16 last fortnight. Cannot run any multimedia
clips however.
Totem disappears with a flash and a popup that sez "could not
open resource for writing". Which filesystem/folder/device file is
this referring to? I have no clue.

Any help will be appreciated.
