Floppy IO Errors

All,
I am trying to load a kernel module from a floppy disk (ms dos formatted).
Is there anything "special" I have to do to format these disks, or make them readable? I can boot from an MS DOS startup disk (as generated by XP) but BSD returns an IO error when trying to read any floppy. I've tried multiple drives, cables, and disks.
It's on a tyan dual opteron system.
Help much appreciated -- next plan is to create a "scratch" SATA volume to play host to the raid card, but I would like to fix this somehow.
