ftp daemon fails

hi - all of a sudden (it used to work) i can't start the ftpd daemon.

# /usr/libexec/ftpd -l -R -p ftpd-id
Sept 10 09:02:22 myhostname ftpd[1234]: getpeername (/usr/libexec/ftpd):
Socket operation on non-socket
#

anyone know where i should look? /etc/hosts looks okay.
