An update to my side of this problem..,

I managed to find an old thread that explained the "MODE_SENSE_BIG command timeout" problem I was experiencing on my system with FreeBSD-5.1 REL and older CD-Rom Sets., here:

    http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=56889

I simply changed the jumper settings of the cdrom drive to "SLAVE", after which I was able to successfully install FreeBSD-5.1 - Note that 5.2.1 and 5.3-REL CD-ROM Set installation cd's still do not work on this machine - just 5.1-REL.

I'm currently cvsup'ing to 5.3-Stable here, hopefully I'll be able to upgrade in a straight-forward way.

Thanks again to all that responded.

    Regards,

    Stacey
