As of 6.0 this no longer works beyond the stage 0 boot, ie, the kernel boot messages come at a different speed. The man page for boot says you can add -S NNNN to boot.config as of 6.0, but it didn't work until 6.1 (at least for me) to set the speed.
There was big discussion about this on stable@ list a couple of months ago.
