I have the same problem with a dual Opteron (RELENG_6_2, i386 and amd64),
in my case the following workaround helped:

from "/boot/loader.conf":

hint.acpi_throttle.0.disabled="1"

Thanks! Unfortunately it does not help here - but with that, it takes a
few seconds longer for the freeze to occur.
