I;ve been running ths for a month with no ill effecets whatsoever, and would
very much like to get this commited somehow. I am not sure of the best

Am I missing something here? It seems like the patch you attached to the PR is a binary so it is not viewable by anyone?
Patch is gzipped and can be easily gunziped after download. (and uuencoded in webpage view)
It is true that patch is better in plaintext diff.
