    Subject: [HPADM] Performance problems

    Hi all.
    Our webserver still suffers with performances.
    This A500 server is running HP-UX 11.00 with a
    webserver using TomCat3 (JSP - Java Servlets),
    JVM 1.1, reading on a remote Oracle database.
    I've installed all recent patches, and changed
    some kernel parameters:

     dbc_max_pct 8
     dbc_min_pct 8
     max_thread_proc 256
     maxuprt 300
     nproc 1620

    I see following CPU state with top:

     LOAD USER NICE SYS IDLE BLOCK SWAIT INTR SSYS
     1.99 71.6% 0.0% 28.4% 0.0% 0.0% 0.0% 0.0% 0.0%

    and with glance following memory usage
    (current / avg / high):

     Mem Util ........ 100% 100% 100%
     Swap Util ........ 50% 50% 50%

    In the glance process list I can see java with a value
    of 735MB (!!) on column RSS. RAM used by the JVM?
    Also the shell prompt reaction is slow!

    The command /usr/contrib/Q4/bin/kmeminfo.11.00
    give me following output:

    Physmem = 262144 Available physical memory:
     Freemem = 332 Free physical memory
     Used = 261812 Used physical memory:
      System = 48904 by kernel:
       Static = 10701 for text and static data
       Dynamic = 17232 for dynamic data
       Bufcache = 20971 for file-system buffer cache
      User = 212005 by user processes
       Uarea = 2869 for thread uareas
      Disowned = 512 disowned pages

    I suppose we have to add memory (2GB now), but better
    we have to find where memory is bad used. In java code,
    we never set a java object to null (in our jsp source)
    after usage. This could help garbage collector to know
    that this object can be lost and free memory before to
    end the execution of the servlet... But really don't
    know if this could be the cause of our problems..

    Any opinion?

    I have an HP9000 D390 server (althought LED says D380?)
     
    and it's attached to an HP Disk Array (which I believe to be an HP-badged
    NIKE array) - model V20.
     
    This has model no. A3550AZ.
     
    The problem we are having is with connecting the tape array so the disks
    become visible.
     
    There are 2 A4107 FWD Scsi controllers inside the server and no matter which
    able or ccontroller we attach the disk array to - we cannot see the A3550AZ
    disk array.
     
    We have tried several reboots including recycling the power.
     
    We have even tried daisy-chaining the A3550AZ disk array onto the working
    external scsi fwd dlt tape drive.
     
    I have moved the termination jumpers on the currently unused A4107 scsi
    controller ( bottom one of the two) - and have attached the disk array but
    still will not recognise the disk array
     
    I feel the problem could be either the lack of necessary kernel device
    drivers for the disk array or an incompatibility with Fast Wide SCSI and
    Fast Wide Differential SCSI becase it isn't always obvious which type is
    which. Another thought that sprung to mind is the layout of the disks within
    the array.
     
    Anyone out there with any ideas or a similar "set-up" - Also the server is
    running 10.20 which I know is very out of date.

    Ok experts, I've got an interesting problem. I have two Suse Linux boxes
    that have all the usual default Unix accounts (bin, lp, etc.) along with a
    few application specific ones. These accounts have no password, just a "#"
    in the passwd file and an "*" in the shadow file. If you try to login using
    one of these accounts you are asked for a password, and access is denied,
    however, if I "rsh" (remsh) from any other Unix system on my network, this
    is what happens:
     
        # rsh linuxbox -l bin uptime
        12:09pm up 135 days....
     
    There aren't any glaring "+" signs in /.rhosts or /etc/hosts.equiv. How is
    this possible? TIA and I will summarize.
