I have several startup scripts that I had put into /sbin/rc4.d several
months ago. I did this because I didn't care if they started after
everything else. The scripts start things such as Apache, RealVNC, and
Cobol. However, these scripts have never run at boot, and I've had to
manually run the scripts. They work find when run from the command line, so
I am suspecting that they simply won't run in rc4.d.

I have done reading about this, and I've found that rc4.d is reserved for
graphical interface managers, such as HP-VUE and CDE--neither of which we
use. Does this mean that the bootup has the intelligence to determine
whether scripts in rc4.d are graphical interface managers, and it won't
start anything that isn't one? This seems odd to me, but the only scripts
in rc4.d are the ones I've put in it, and none of them start at boot. Like
I said, when I run them manually after the system is up, they work just
fine, so I don't believe there is anything wrong with the way I've written
the startup scripts. I used /sbin/init.d/template to create them, so I'm
pretty sure my scripts have the proper format for bootup to run them.

    Dave
