Thanks to all who responded including: Wolf-Dietrich Schmook, Bill Hassell,
Eef Hartman, David Lodge, Chris Medaglia, Rita Workman, Bob Vance, Thomas
    Northrup, and Steve Hamilton.

There were several differing opionions about whether or not single user mode
is required, however, this was the preferred by the respondents. Since I
was in a hurry, I took David's suggestion to just create a new volume and
mount it on the directory where the new software is to be installed.

Thanks to all who responded. The correct method to expand /opt is:

    (boot in single user mode)
    isl> boot -is
    # mount /usr
    # mount /var
    # lvextend -l ## /dev/vg00/lvol6 (or whatever vol is your /opt)
    # extendfs -F vxfs /dev/vg00/rlvol6
    # /etc/reboot (or your favorite reboot sequence)

    Thanks!
