Hello out there!
Thanks a lot for all the replies to my posting. There were a lot of useful
suggestions out there. The one that I picked (i.e. the easiest one... ;) )
is using the latest version of gzip (version 1.3.5). The one that comes with
HP-UX 11i by default seems to be 1.2.4 and this version can't handle files >
2 GB.
The results are as follows:
export file size: 18.9 GB
bzip2: duration 5 hours, resulting file size: 1.2 GB
new gzip: duration 45 minutes, file size: 2.1 GB
The compressions rate is perfectly acceptable for us and the compression
time is much less.
Thanks again for all your replies!
Regards,
Helmut
