Yes, the UPS can indeed remove power but in an uncontrolled manner.
So as long as the server can be quiesced before the shutdown, there
should not be any problems with corrupted filesystems. The same is
true with the GPS power off command, although I seem to remember
that some models may send a shutdown to HP-UX before completing
    the power down.

But in a choice between a clean power down and ratty power as a
storm trashes the transmission lines, I'd take the clean power
off. But you may want to look at Liebert or APC for complete
datacenter solutions where you can power off everything with
a single remote command. Note that security for such a feature
    is mandatory.

Thanks for taking the time to write a followup, Steve. I'll look into that.

    Dave,
As I read your original post, and this SUMMARY, something kept nibbling at
    the back of my mind...
I finally ran across the information that I was trying fervently to "page
    in" from long-deactivated memory:
If you have a UPS on the system, and are using the 'ups_mond' daemon for
shutting down the system in the event of a power failure, then there is
command 'power_onoff' that will shutdown the system and instruct the UPS to
    power off the system.
I haven't used the command in any practical application, but I thought that
I would pass it on to you...
