My thanks to Jeff Cleverley, Eef Hartman, Jim Caley, Doug Clendening, Oxiel
Contreras, Chuck Reinke, Kelly Choo, and Bill Hassell for responding to my
    questions.

A number of possibilities were voiced. Two users have experienced sticky
on/off switches. Two other users suffered from bad or failing fans. One
person saw a similar failure due to overheating by an accumulation of dust
in the case. A rare instance of a renegade cron job was reported.
UPS/shutdown software was responsible in one instance. One vendor suggested
a failing processor. A marginal or failing power supply was also an
indication for the failure. Eef Hartman and Bill Hassell also noted that
there were no software command(s) that would power the system off.

Subsequent to my question, I then ran the software for two days without its
polling and control functions activated. The system remained up. The polling
and control functions were activated and it failed within 24 hours. It would
seem to indicate that once the system has 'normal' power demands the power
    supply is failing.

    Thanks again,
    Larry Long
