I ended up consulting HP on this to ensure I had it right. Following is how
the carriers should look when I upgrade:

    Extender
Slot Num Configured and Slot label for each DIMM (MB)
      -------- --------------------------------------------
                  0a 2a 1a 3a 3b 1b 2b 0b
                ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

         EXT 0 1024 1024 512 512 512 512 1024 1024
         EXT 1 1024 512 512 512 512 512 512 1024
         EXT 2 1024 512 512 512 512 512 512 1024
      ------------------------------------------------------
      System Total (MB): 16384

I have an N4000 with 8 GB of RAM, as follows:

       Extender
Slot Num Configured and Slot label for each DIMM (MB)
       -------- --------------------------------------------
                   0a 2a 1a 3a 3b 1b 2b 0b
                 ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

          EXT 0 512 512 512 512 512 512 512 512
          EXT 1 512 512 512 512 512 512 512 512
       ------------------------------------------------------
       System Total (MB): 8192

I need to add an additional 8 GB. I would prefer to get larger-capacity
memory cards, so I'll look to get eight 1-GB cards. To ensure proper
interleaving, following is how I believe I must configure the carriers:

      Extender
Slot Num Configured and Slot label for each DIMM (MB)
       -------- --------------------------------------------
                   0a 2a 1a 3a 3b 1b 2b 0b
                 ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

          EXT 0 1024 512 512 -- -- 512 512 1024
          EXT 1 1024 512 512 -- -- 512 512 1024
          EXT 2 1024 512 512 -- -- 512 512 1024
          EXT 3 1024 512 512 -- -- 512 512 1024
       ------------------------------------------------------
       System Total (MB): 16384

    Is this correct?

    Dave
