I thought Mike Keighley had a very good explanation so I am including
    it below.

    ================================================
Yes you can continue to use the software.
HP issued you with a license-to-use when you bought the original
    package.
All the ones I have seen are permanent.

Software maintenance is usually listed on your HP support contract as
"Product name HP9000 Servers LTU" and this is where the confusion kicks

    in.
Many people think that they need that "LTU" to continue using the
    software.
In fact in this context it stands for "License-to-use-Updates", i.e.
    you
can install new versions from future Apps CDs, and if you upgrade HP-UX
    to
a new version e.g. 11.11 to 11.23, you may well need to do that.

But if your HP-UX version is stable for the life of the machine, no you

don't have to maintain all those apps like Glance+ Omni-this,
    DataProtector that.

I have had HP support sales people try to tell me otherwise, but the
    consensus is as above.

I do always keep LTU and phone support on HP-UX itself, just in case I

need a crash analysis or patch one day. But Apps, no.

I am looking for some clarification on software maintenance from HP on
    one of their products.

We have a product we purchased quite a few years ago for one of our
HP9000 boxes and had been carrying maintenance on that product. My
manager dropped maintenance on that product because we thought it was
going to be replace by another product from a different vendor. Now I
find out this might not happen and the original product might continue
    to be used.

What I need to know is, can we legally continue to use the product we
originally purchased without maintenance, knowing we don't have
    software
support or upgrades? I want to be sure what we are doing is not wrong.
    I
don't agree with this whole thing but it's not something that is under
    my control.
