Many thanks Ermin Borovac for the reply. He hit the nail on the head. I need PHSS_34102 patch to fix this known bug. Indeed, after I installed this patch, the problem is gone.
Note: To install this patch doesn't require system reboot.
Regards,
Edi

Hi Edi,
Are you running finger from xterm? If so, it's a known problem, fixed by the latest XClients patch (e.g. PHSS_34102 for 11.11).
From the patch notes:
2. ( SR: 8606403411 CR: JAGaf63344 )
When the number of device files opened is more than the
npty value, the corresponding entries made by the xfree86
xterm into the utmp/wtmp files for these device files
(having format as "/dev/pty/ttyxx") are incorrect.
Hence the finger command gives an error.
Regards,
Ermin

Hi all,
Has any body come across the following problem?
When I run finger, it returns with error similar to the following:
finger: error STATing /dev/ttyy0
# who | grep ttyy0
quaecbc ttyy0 Nov 14 10:23
Of course /dev/ttyy0 doesn't exist. I found it under /dev/pty:
# ll /dev/pty/ttyy0
crw--w---- 1 quaecbc tty 17 0x000090 Nov 14 10:27 /dev/pty/ttyy0
Regards,
Edi
