    Greetings,

I've run into an interesting issue involving a SunFire 880 running Solaris 8,
which is having intermittent problems contacting another server, an HP, on the
network. When this outage occurs, I observe the following:

    - The SunFire cannot ping or otherwise contact the HP.
    - Any other machine CAN contact the HP.
    - Any server, including the HP, CAN contact the SunFire.
    - The SunFire CAN contact any other machine. I've tested about 20, some of
which are on the same subnet as the target machine.

I've used IP addresses throughout the testing, so it's not a nameservice
issue. However, it definitely sounds like a networking or routing issue,
especially with the sporadic nature of the outages. Either that, or the
SunFire would seem to be the cause. Is there any possible explanation for why
the SunFire would behave in this way? Are there any suggestions beyond
looking into the routing configuration? Forgive me if I've posed a networking
question to an otherwise Sun-specific group. I was asked to post here
because it was a source of creative thinking in regards to these problems.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

    Chris
