    Solution: apply patch 113614-12 to bring SunVTS 5.1 up to 5.1p2 level.

    My thanks to Casper *** and "AP'.

    Interesingly, the SunVTS 5.1 that I installed was just recently pulled
    down from Sun's download center, and there is no indication of the
    patch.
