    Hi managers,

    Thanks to all who replied with useful suggestions. -- Vichnevetski,
    Alexei; Chang, Johnny; Darren Dunham; Williams, Shawn; David Foster;
     Jonathan V Hays; Pete Geenhuizen; Florendo, Jay Jay.

    Darren put me on the right track -- this error occurrs when there are
    multiple entries for the host in /etc/ethers.

    Again, thanks

    Ahau K'in

    The problem is repeated below.

    Hi managers,

    I have a 'known good' jumpstart server on a subnet. It has installed
    numerous clients locally and on an extension to the subnet in another
    building.

    I have a client, an e250, that I need to install, hostname Israel.

    On the jumpstart server:-

    # cat /etc/netmasks
    10.69.2.0 255.255.254.0

    # cat /etc/ethers | grep israel
    0:3:ba:2:e6:2c israel

    # ^ethers^hosts
    cat /etc/hosts | grep israel
    10.69.2.202 israel

    # pwd
    /jumpstart/OS/Solaris_8_2002_02/Solaris_8/Tools

    # ./add_install_client israel sun4u
    cleaning up preexisting install client "israel"
    removing israel from bootparams
    starting rarpd
    updating /etc/bootparams

    .issue a 'boot net - install' on client and it can't get beyond 'Timeout
    waiting for ARP/RARP packet'. So I tried snooping, and could see the
    packets arriving at the jumpstart server and getting ignored:

    # !snoop
    snoop 0:3:ba:2:e6:2c
    Using device /dev/hme (promiscuous mode)
    OLD-BROADCAST -> (broadcast) RARP C Who is 0:3:ba:2:e6:2c ?
    OLD-BROADCAST -> (broadcast) RARP C Who is 0:3:ba:2:e6:2c ?

    .and so on. So I started up rarpd in debug mode, and got the following:-

    # /usr/sbin/in.rarpd -d -a
    /usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[1] device hme0 ethernetaddress 8:0:20:b0:78:18
    /usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[1] device hme0 address 10.69.2.245
    /usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[1] device hme0 subnet mask 255.255.254.0
    /usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] starting rarp service on device hme0 address
    8:0:20:b0:78:18
    /usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] RARP_REQUEST for 0:3:ba:2:e6:2c
    /usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] trying physical netnum 10.69.2.0 mask fffffe00
    /usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] got host entry but no IP address on this net

    Can anyone help me with what this means?

    Thanks

    Ahau K'in
