THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO REPLIED.

Whilst there doesn't seem to be any solid information on where the
    DACstore
is stored on the disk, Tony from Sun has offered lots of advice on adding
    disks to arrays:

o Quickest 3 way: Hot-Add the disks once at a time (takes 2-3 mins per
    drive).
Wait until the LED goes solid green for each drive.
What this does is physically recognise the new drive and reformat the
    hidde
40MB DACStore area on the drive and load it with the configuration
    currently
running on the new home array.

o Another method would be to reset the "old" array to a default
    configuration
before you remove the drives, but this would mean the complete destruction
of data and LUNs on that array (plus the luxury of a spare array to do
    that
    operation).

    /Chris Wells
