Unix script needed

    Thanks for your perivious help.Here is simple and bit complicated script i
    need.
    1)I have sunfire running solaris 8 and a dir called /reports/mainreports
    2)For example I need to rename all the .txt files in the dir "mainreport" to
    .rtf with mm/dd/yy
    3)After that i need to ftp to those renamed files to mainframe.(have
    username and passwd)

    Is there anyway whenever the .txt files present in "mainreports" this
    scripts has to automatically run and do

    the above stuff.Adv thx for unix scripting guru's..I am beginner.
