    Update:

I received replies from the following, and all were appreciated:

     joe.fletcher@btconnect.com
     Mark.E.Hargrave@maf.nasa.gov
     kendall.j.lloyd@bankofamerica.com
     Russell_C_Page@national.com.au
     PhippsAC@telkom.co.za

So far there's been no final solution. I have however managed to
increase the time between failures from three to seven days by
converting the mount to an automounted mount. That may just mean
that the filesystem doesn't happen to be mounted at the right time
to fail again after three days, but a longer time between failures
is better than nothing. It still takes a reboot to clear the
problem, and that's still unacceptable, so efforts will continue
    to determine the cause.
