    Hi again,

Here is a partly summary. The problem is still there, and I've logged a
call at the SUN Support Center as I don't know anything else to do.

    Thanks to
    Matt Clausen
    Peter Ondruska
    Jim McVey
    Charlie Gianetto
    Chris Lovett
and special thanks to John Malick for their advice and input.

Most advice was to re-label the disks when a change had been made to the
    3510 configuration.
John Malick and Charlie Gianetto also advised to play around with the
    cylinder/heads/sectors in the 3510 config.
    I've tried several settings, <65536/255/255, <65536/64/255 and
<65536/255/variable, but all with the same result:
newfs hangs after creating the 5th or 6th superblock.

I'll summarize again once I've solved the problem. In the meantime, if
anyone's got new tips/hints, they are very welcome !

    met vriendelijke groet/with kind regards,

    Hi all,

Last week our newly SUN StorEdge 3510 FC arrived. Currently, I am (trying)
to configure the damn thing, but for some reason, I can't seem to execute a
    'newfs' on the LUN's
    Configuration is as follows:

2 logical drives, one in RAID 1 (consisting out of 4 disks) one in RAID 5
(consisting out of 7 disks), 1 global hotspare
The RAID 5 LD is divided into three partitions. The RAID 1 LD is one
partition. The partitions are mapped to a host, so all four LUN's are
visible there. So far so good.
But, when I want to give the LUN's a filesystem, it seems that the newfs
command hangs. It looks like this:

    root@nlastis1# newfs -f 4096 /dev/rdsk/c2t40d0s6
    newfs: construct a new file system /dev/rdsk/c2t40d0s6: (y/n)? y
Cylinder groups must have a multiple of 16 cylinders with the given
    parameters
    Rounded cgsize up to 256
Warning: insufficient space in super block for
rotational layout tables with nsect 127, ntrack 127, and nrpos 8.
Omitting tables - file system performance may be impaired.
Warning: 5 sector(s) in last cylinder unallocated
    /dev/rdsk/c2t40d0s6: 629111640 sectors in 39005 cylinders of 127 tracks,
    127 sectors
            307183.4MB in 2438 cyl groups (16 c/g, 126.01MB/g, 15808 i/g)
    super-block backups (for fsck -F ufs -o b=#) at:
     32, 258224, 516416, 774608,

After the fourth superblock, it just stops.

As for the message "Warning: insufficient space in super block for
rotational layout tables with nsect 127, ntrack 127, and nrpos 8", this
seems to be a regular message on large
disks. At least, that is what a Google search comes up with.

I've already configured the cylinders/heads/sectors to <65536/255/255, as
described in par. 5.5.10 of the 3510 installation manual, as there are
filesystems bigger than 253 GB, but even this seems not to work.

when trussing the mkfs / newfs processes, I don't get any output on screen.

    Anyone can give me a clue /hint / tip / solution ??
