        Dear fellow sun managers,

I am in the need to boot Solaris 8 or higher on a Netra X1 that has
a Solaris 8, because of a lost root password. For this, I can use a
nearby (same subnet) machine, same model, that has Debian/Sarge in order
to mount the root partition and erase root's password.

Previously, I had tried booting Debian/Sarge, but unfortunately the
boot image doesn't know how to mount UFS partitions. However, if anyone
can provide a hint on this direction I'll give it another try. Booting
Debian/Sarge works without any problems for me.

Now I am trying to boot Solaris, but am stuck here:

    Executing last command: boot net:dhcp
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ethernet@c:dhcp File and args:
Using Onboard Transceiver - Link Up.
Timeout waiting for BOOTP/DHCP reply. Retrying ...
    2aa00
    Server IP address: 10.0.0.19
    Client IP address: 10.0.0.20
    Router IP address: 10.0.0.17
    Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.248
Using Onboard Transceiver - Link Up.
panic - boot: Could not mount
    filesystem.
    Program terminated
    ok

I have read a previous post to the list by Martin Schmitt here:
    <http://sunportal.sunmanagers.org/pipermail/summaries/2002-February/000893.html>

Unfortunately, so far I haven't been succesful. I did install
bootparamd, rarpd, and nfs. I see that the client does get its IP
address by DHCP and fetches the inetboot file (from the Solaris 8 CDs).
All this I have reconfirmed by looking at tcpdump data.

The panic seems to happen right after finishing the download of
    inetboot.

Note that I don't have any trouble booting Debian; it is Solaris who
happens to make my life miserable.

Another thing worth mentioning is that it seems almost impossible to
setup a Solaris boot server if you can't run the scripts
add_install_server et al. It would be extremely useful if a document
existed explaining of how to do the same "by hand".

Thanks in advance. I will summarize.
