    Hi all,

I was just trying to setup a Solaris 9 box as a time server for a LAN
with a bunch of Macs. On Solaris 8 I usually do

    *****************************************************
            touch /var/ntp/ntp.drift
            cp /etc/inet/ntp.server /etc/inet/ntp.conf
            pico /etc/inet/ntp.conf

    Modify the following lines:

            server 131.188.3.220
            #fudge 127.127.XType.0 stratum 0

    Then start it.

            /etc/init.d/xntpd start
    ******************************************************

This used to work for me. Now with Solaris 9 it does not. The clients
gives me "ntpdate[16816]: no server suitable for synchronization
found". I then snooped the ip traffic on the server and got the
    following.

    bash-2.05# snoop | grep -i ntp
    Using device /dev/dmfe0 (promiscuous mode)
jupiter.smartsoft-hl.de -> merkur NTP client (Wed Sep 29
    16:01:33 2004)
merkur -> jupiter.smartsoft-hl.de NTP server (Wed Sep 29
    16:01:33 2004)
jupiter.smartsoft-hl.de -> merkur NTP client (Wed Sep 29
    16:01:33 2004)
merkur -> jupiter.smartsoft-hl.de NTP server (Wed Sep 29
    16:01:33 2004)
jupiter.smartsoft-hl.de -> merkur NTP client (Wed Sep 29
    16:01:33 2004)
merkur -> jupiter.smartsoft-hl.de NTP server (Wed Sep 29
    16:01:33 2004)
jupiter.smartsoft-hl.de -> merkur NTP client (Wed Sep 29
    16:01:33 2004)
merkur -> jupiter.smartsoft-hl.de NTP server (Wed Sep 29
    16:01:33 2004)

Here merkur is the Solaris 9 box and jupiter is the Mac. Any idea what
    goes wrong here?

    Thanks a lot!

    Regards,

       Andreas
