This is related to the question I posted on Saturday.

(su returns a segmentation fault when trying to su over
    to certain user accounts).

I've noticed that there is a point of commonality among
    the impacted user accounts:

For all of the impacted user accounts, their entries in
/etc/shadow all have a "$" as the first character of the
    encrypted password.

Does anyone know if a $ as the first character of a
user's encrypted password has any significance, other than
simply being a part of the encrypted password?

I've thoroughly tested this, and it appears that the only
accounts that are causing 'su' to return a segmentation fault
are those that have the $ as the first character in the
    encrypted password.

I know this might sound like a very strange point of commonality,
however I don't know how to explain it.

If anyone has any insight they could share, I thank them in
advance and also promise to post a SUMMARY solution to this
list once the problem is solved.

    Thanks again.
