Thanks to all who replied.. Far to numerous to mention names, but the
general consensus was that I didn't require the smart cards, but I did
require the Sun Ray Server Software to be installed on a machine. It seems
that the machine that did have it running has died (corrupt disk) and as I
only want this for personal use, I can't afford to shell out the bucks for
the software. Does anyone know if there is a package available for a home
user at no cost just to muck around with?

I only want to hang a couple of Sun Ray 1's off of it to muck around with...

    All,

I have acquired a couple of Sun Ray 1 thin clients that I want to do some
testing with, and need to know a little more about them. Can anyone tell me
if they *require* a smart card to work, or should they work without one?
When I turn them on, they just sit at a screen with the hourglass logo on it
and I cannot get into the setup (Shift+Props), any ideas? All responses
    great appreciated...
