Log file removed still taking up space.

All,
I removed a log file that was in /etc while there was still a process
writing to it and du shows its gone but df shows it still taking up space.
I know the process IDs that were writing to it when I deleted it.
Anyone have any ideas on recovering the space without rebooting?
