has anyone *successfully* installed the oracle 9.2.0.7 patch?

the installer is KILLING me.

when i run runInstaller as oracle, I get this:

Checking temp space: 0 MB available, 250 MB required.sh:
/command_output_7464: cannot create
Failed <<<<
Checking swap space: 0 MB available, 500 MB required. Failed <<<<
Checking monitor: must be configured to display at least 256 color
Failed <<<<
>>> Could not execute /usr/openwin/bin/xdpyinfo

i can write to /tmp, there is plenty of space there.
i have lots of swap.
i can run /usr/openwin/bin/xdpyinfo on the command line and see that my
display is set to "true color"

my X forwarding and VNC setup is working fine, i can launch xclock & etc.

i've done absolutely everything to the environment variables in oracle's
documentation, i've got everything
set up from my previous 9i installation. i have all of the solaris patch
prerequisites to install the 9.2.0.7
patch, but the stupid installer just won't start.

the oracle documentation has hints about setting your $DISPLAY, but
apparently they didn't anticipate
any other kind of problem (maybe because they're too busy counting money to
write an installer that
works, but who knows.) there's an article on metalink about installing it
on solaris (OracleMetaLink
note 283565.1) but the article has been removed, so i'm basically totally
stuck. my boss insists that we
install 9 and then upgrade to 10 later, even though EVERYONE I KNOW who i've
talked to about this has
said something like "oracle 9? no one runs that because it's a buggy pile
of crap.")

If anyone can help me out with this, I'd appreciate it, and will summarize.
