problem with ping

I had a strange problem on two different Solaris 8 machines
yesterday:

---
$ ping 192.168.0.1
ld.so.1: ping: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/lib/nss_dns.so.1: symbol res_gethostbyname: referenced symbol not found Killed
---

Same error occured when logged in as root, or as normal
user.

I figured a patch must have broken something. I rebooted
the machine to single user mode to apply patches, but ping
started working. So, rebooted again into runlevel 3, and
ping continued to work properly. ???

This is the first time I have ever clear a strange problem
with a reboot on Solaris. Stanger still.. it happened on two
different machines, and both problems cleared with a reboot.

Any thoughts about what might have caused this?

Thanks.
