Strange picld error

I have a system that twice gets remarkably slow, system load shoots through
the roof and current logins take minutes to respond to keystrokes, forcing a
hard boot. Network services and applications appear up and pings. When the
load comes down I see that the system (a 16core v890) was running at a load
average of 84 for awhile.
