App Server to DB Server Crossover Connection

Hi,

We're planning the implementation of a couple of new mid-range servers. One
will primarily function as an Oracle DB server, the other as an ERP App
server.
The two machines will live in close proximity to one another, run solaris 9
and
(speculatively) be installed with 2 x quad copper ethernet cards per machine.

While discussing network configuration options, we arrived at the idea of a
direct
network link between the two, over crossover cable. The main advantage of
this
is maximising physical segregation from our existing LAN infrastruction and
so
minimising potential network resource contention problems. I have not used
this configuration before in an enterprise setting for any purpose other than
for
connecting PCs, so I could use some advice...

I would be grateful for any information/guidance/whitepapers/etc. that you can
provide on this configuration and technical advantages/disadvantages of using
simple crossover cabling for this purpose, particularly when compared with
traditional switched LAN/WAN. Even short notes will be appreciated. I'll
collate
all information received/found and summarise.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Barry
