sendmail issues

we are not receiving any emails from this machine
running 2.8. this is error from messages...
Dec 19 09:36:55 gh34 sendmail[4349]: [ID 801593
mail.crit] kBDIMks18301: SYSERR(root): endmailer
local: wait: No child processes
Dec 19 09:39:51 gh34 ntpdate[2101]: [ID 398266
daemon.notice] waiting 300 seconds before trying
again.

also what would be the best way to stop/start sendmail
since i see the sendmail under /usr/lib?
