Apparently, no one has the answer for this dilemma.
My thanks go out to the only respondent, JV711, who suggested booting
into CDE and seeing if this cured the problem. Unfortunately, this did
not resolve the issue.

This problem has me wondering if the Twilight Zone really exists...
After installing the latest 8_Recommended patch cluster (taking care of
DST and other things) on a SunFire V480 running OpenWindows (I know, I
know...), all systems are fine...with ONE problem...on only 1 system we
can open up something like snapshot and it's fine. But when we try to
use a child operation the screen will go white and give us the login
prompt as if we were in single user mode. But while this is happening,
everything is proceeding normally in the OS. As soon as you log in, it
immediately goes back to the normal desktop as if you were only
unlocking a screensaver.
This has not happened with two other V480 servers that are at the same
patch level and running the same apps. We also have 3 other servers
running the same OS and OpenWindows with no problems either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I will summarize.
