Swapping PSU in Sun Fire V40z brings down fiber links

This is my first post to this list, please be kind.

I have a Sun Fire V40z, running RHEL4 AS Update 1 with kernel 2.6.9-34.ELsmp.
The system is attached to an EMC CX500 disk array via dual Emulex LP9802
Fibre Channel HBAs.

The system has redundant PSU's, which are supposed to be hot-swappable.
However, when recently replacing a PSU, the fiber connection was lost and
the Emulex adapters showed amber lights.

I was hoping someone on this list may have an explanation or at least some
pointers on what may be the issue.
