Thanks to Bryan and Matthew for their answers!
Setting either "UseLogin yes" or "UsePAM yes" in my sshd_config did the
trick. However, enabling UseLogin results in X11Forwarding being
disabled (which I need to keep enabled), so I went with "UsePAM yes"
instead.
