Unable to mount a filesystem when booted from bootable CDROM image to /a or /mnt

I have run into an interesting problem which I have never seen
before. I have been attempting to mount a disk filesystem under the
standard /a and /mnt cdrom mount points on various Solaris install
cdroms and am running into a device is busy error. This happens even
though we are 100% sure there is nothing mounted on either /a or /mnt
(freshly booted from cdrom for example). It happens when attempting
to use Solaris 10 install CDs [tried 11/07, 6/06, 11/06] or Solaris 9
install CDs. The OS installed on the disk media is Solaris 10
[fairly sure it is 11/06 - if not, it 6/06] and the base hardware is
a Sun Fire V240. I also see and error when booting any of the
install CDs along the lines of:

WARNING - load/start/stop hardware impending failure data error rate
too high
blah blah blah FUJITSU sd@1,0
blah blah block 0

I can see the partition map on the disk. I receive a permission
denied just after selecting either disk in the chassis (there are
2). I just cannot mount any of the filesystems from either disk.
So, I am wondering if what I am seeing are SMART messages at boot
time from cdrom concerning sd@1,0 indicating media failure which is
preventing me from attempting to mount? If not, I am wondering how I
might be able to clear whatever flags need to be cleared to mount a
filesystem from the disks to /a or /mnt.
